This workshop is an introduction to the vision and the information technology of the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative (ECAI) (www.ecai.org). ECAI is a global consortium of historians, archaeologists and humanities scholars; curators, cultural heritage managers and librarians; and researchers in GIS, networking and other information technology fields. By combining technologies from geographic information science and digital library research, ECAI is creating a globally distributed atlas of cultural data.
The ECAI TimeMap methodology allows diverse digital resources on servers around the world to be combined and viewed on a single time-enabled map interface. Users may select digital resources with information about time and space in order to create customized maps based on their interests. While digital resources are catalogued in a central clearinghouse, the data itself may be located anywhere in the world. ECAI, and its TimeMap methodology, respond to the value in discovering, integrating, and visualizing cultural digital resources using the universal categories of time and place.

By the end of the workshop, participants will understand ECAI's vision of a globally distributed atlas of cultural resources. They will be able to create customized maps based on their interests using existing datasets in the ECAI clearinghouse. They will be familiar with the capacities of the TimeMap toolkit and the role of the ECAI community in assisting with project development, metadata registration, and electronic publication. Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss their own projects, in order to assist the future development of ECAI's technology in supporting user requirements.

The workshop is targeted to VSMM participants who have (completed or under development) web-accessible cultural data with temporal and spatial information. The spatial information can range from a single coordinate pointing to one site, or a complex spatial database. Workshop participants are not required to have prior familiarity with ECAI or its basic technologies.
